There are over 1000 different assessments in use today, many of them the same tool branded differently. Finding the right assessment is downright confusing. Many companies select an assessment, invest thousands of dollars certifying their people, and then find out that it`s not the right tool for assessing executive leaders. The key to your success with assessments is Choosing Assessments Wisely. The right assessment depends not only on the role, but how you plan to use it. Assessments can be used for:
- Pre-employment screening
- Targeted selection
- Employee development
- Retention
- Succession planning & promotion
- Team building
Some assessments are a good ‘preview’ into a candidate, helping to sort through applicants, but these are clearly not positioned to function as effective hiring and selection tools. Others help you see into a person`s work style and preferences, and these serve a large purpose in matching, in coaching, and in assigning new tasks. However, these assessments clearly state they are not to be used as OFCCP-compliant hiring tools. |
The right assessment serves its purpose. It supports a behavioral interviewing process to uncover a candidate’s values, motivations, habits, work styles, behaviors and likely future performance in a role that’s been well defined. First ask yourself why you want to use a pre-employment assessment.
- Have you benchmarked the role with nine or more top performers and are you creating a top grading program to attract and hire more top performers?
- Does your company experience higher than expected turnover and are your hiring costs negatively impacting your profitability?
- Is the role difficult to fill, where only a certain type of person with specific traits can succeed?
Next, ask yourself what is most important in an assessment. Is validation, distortion or the 4/5ths rule important or is it cost, speed and accessibility? Are you looking for an assessment to tell you pass or fail or are you looking for an assessment that lets you see into the potential employee, and how they can develop to the next level?

We help you choose the right assessments for your firm, and then we work side by side with you to train you on implementing these assessments into your hiring, selection, on boarding, employee engagement and employee development processes. Finally, we help you interpret the results and make sound decisions.
